Research

This work explores using machine vision to guide robotic drilling operations in aerospace composite manufacturing, enabling real-time feedback and error correction during drilling.

Challenge

Drilling holes in composite structures requires extraordinary precision, and traditional manual methods are slow. We investigated whether automated vision guidance could improve both speed and accuracy.

Approach

We developed camera systems and algorithms to detect tool position in real-time and provide corrective feedback to the robot during drilling operations.

Results

The system demonstrated sub-millimeter accuracy on composite structures and was validated across multiple drilling scenarios, showing promise for automated precision manufacturing.
